Alert: Phone scam taking place in Carteret County that is targeting businesses

Some area businesses are receiving phone calls that allege there is a power disconnect notice from Duke Energy, due to lack of payment. When they business owner states their bills are up to date, they are given a separate number for "dispute resolution." The caller knows the name of the individual who is listed on the business Duke Energy account, and the amount of the past several bills. They are being told the amount can be reimbursed, but they need to pay it in cash first. Duke Energy Headquarters has confirmed with at least one area business there is a scam of this nature going around, and no money should be paid to the callers.

The incoming number associated with the scam is 888-501-2224, and the number given for dispute resolution is 800-918-2290, ext. 1. Do not answer either number. If you do answer and they ask for money, hang up.
