Message from the Town Planning Director

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the Town of Beaufort’s Planning and Inspections webpage. If this is your first time or you have visited the site many times, our goal is to provide information that will help in navigating through the Town’s various developmental processes.

Let me take a minute to tell you a little about the development of our Town. Beaufort is the third oldest Town in North Carolina and was settled in the year 1709. Because of its location near the Atlantic Ocean, it has been recognized throughout centuries for its rich maritime history and natural beauty.

We have been an adaptive community that once supported maritime trade from Naval stores to menhaden products and bi-products. More recently the community has been transformed into a Town driven by its historic and eco-tourism industry, as thousands of vacationers each year make Beaufort a destination because of its charm, scenic beauty, history, and an occasional experience with pirates.

The balance between good growth and economic prosperity is a constant here by which all development, whether great or small, is measured with the natural environment in an effort to keep our community what it has been and what we hope it will be for future generations: a unique place rich in history, natural beauty, and an enjoyable area to live, work, and enjoy all life has to offer.

If you have development questions about our community or want to get involved please let us know.
