Major Developments and Messages Concerning Hurricane Idalia

September 1, 2023

10 a.m. The Town has rescinded the State of Emergency. No major issues have been reported from Tropical Storm Idalia. 

August 31, 2023

11:30 a.m. The heaviest rains and most impactful winds have passed through our area. Light rain is predicted for the remainder of the day. 5-10 inches of rain fell across the Crystal Coast. Storm surge is still anticipated to impact high tides throughout the region. The next high tide in Taylor's Creek is at 9:18 p.m.  View the NWS Briefing for additional details. 

9 a.m. Localized flooding has been observed in areas of Beaufort to include Meeting Street and Glenda Drive.  

Staff continues to monitor the storm and assess damages.

August 30, 2023:

7 p.m. The Town of Beaufort has declared a State of Emergency effective at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, August 30. It will remain in effect until rescinded. 

The forecast remains largely the same with an increased threat of tornado activity forecast for Wednesday night into Thursday. Stay safe and have multiple ways to receive weather notifications.

The Town of Beaufort continues to closely monitor the approach of Hurricane Idalia. At this time, we are anticipating 1-3 foot of storm surge on a King Tide with heavy rainfall.

3 Main Threats

  • Rain – 4-10 inches and up to 15 inches in isolated areas
  • Flash Flooding  
  • 1-3 foot of storm surge in Beaufort and 2-4 foot east of Beaufort

Anticipate impacts to begin Wednesday evening with the possibility of tornados.

  • Make sure you have food, water, medications, etc.
  • Remember to never drive through flood waters.

The National Weather Service issued a Tropical Storm Warning and a Storm Surge Watch for our area. 

Carteret County Public Schools announced they will operate on a remote learning day on Thursday, Aug. 31. All after school activities for Aug. 30 & 31 are canceled.  

August 29, 2023:

Hurricane Idalia is projected to hit our area as a Tropical Storm with impacts beginning Wednesday evening. The storm is projected to hit during a King Tide with sustained winds driving from the Northeast beginning Wednesday and potentially lasting all day Friday. It is anticipated that the peak high tides will be Thursday evening and Friday. Idalia is slowing down as it approaches our area. Impacts beyond Saturday are unclear at this time.   • The National Weather Service issued a Tropical Storm Watch for portions of Eastern NC.
  • Gov. Roy Cooper has declared a State of Emergency in North Carolina ahead of Hurricane Idalia’s anticipated landfall. With the State of Emergency comes the activation of the NC’s emergency operations plan, which includes waiving transportation rules to help the transport of fuel and critical supplies and services, helping first responders and the agriculture industry to prepare for inclement weather, and protecting consumers from price gouging.
  • Town of Beaufort Emergency Personnel continue to monitor Hurricane Idalia. It is anticipated to impact our area as a Tropical Storm. 
  • Residents are urged to be prepared and remain vigilant.
