Mayor Sharon Harker - Elected Nov. 2021 &  Nov. 2023 - Term expires Dec. 2027

Sharon Harker has deep roots in Beaufort, North Carolina. Although raised in New York, she spent childhood summers visiting family in Beaufort—forming a strong bond with the town’s community, traditions, and natural beauty. In 1983, she made Beaufort her permanent home after marrying Beaufort native Perry Harker in 1981. Together, they raised their three children in Beaufort, a town rooted in a proud and rich history. Harker is a dedicated supporter of Carteret County Public Schools and the Boys and Girls Club, where she served on several PTO and Advisory Boards.

She has been president of the Carteret County League of Women Voters and was named 'Woman of the Year.' Harker has served on several local and state boards, including the Olde Beaufort Farmers Market Advisory Board, the executive board of the North Carolina Coastal Federation, and the North Carolina League of Municipalities Advancing Municipal Leaders Advisory Board. She is also a proud member of the Beaufort Women's Club, the Delta Kappa Gamma Society (honoring women educators), and the Black Elected Municipal Officials (BEMO) organization.

Professionally, Harker worked as a licensed respiratory therapist for over two decades before becoming an administrator at Carteret Health Care in Morehead City. Committed to lifelong learning and leadership, she was selected as part of the inaugural cohort of the Hunt State Policy Fellows in 2021 and currently serves as a board member of Coastal Community Action.

Harker served as a Town of Beaufort Commissioner from 2015 to 2021 and was elected Mayor in 2021—becoming the first African American to serve in the role. She is a strong advocate for affordable and workforce housing, economic opportunity, environmental stewardship, and fostering a welcoming community where every resident feels seen, heard, and valued.

Understanding the responsibilities of leading a coastal town, Harker created the Mayor’s Conservation Program to raise awareness about protecting Beaufort’s natural resources. The program focuses on educating and engaging residents and visitors in collaborative efforts to preserve the environment for future generations.

As a committed public servant and advocate for effective local government, Harker brings insight, dedication, and a collaborative spirit to every board she serves on.
