Planning and Inspections

The Planning & Inspections Department:

  • Protects and promotes Beaufort’s aesthetics, health, safety, welfare and property values by providing professional planning, building inspections, and code compliance services.
  • Provides professional services to the public which include: land use and development information, coordinated review of development proposals, issuance of building permits and performing subsequent inspections.
  • Responsible for code enforcement, flood map information, transportation planning, special projects management and grant writing.
  • Provides staff support to the Board of Adjustment, Historic Preservation Commission, Planning Board, and Stormwater Committee.

The department is actively involved in the regulations and compliance for all types of construction and development projects within the community, the standards for which can be found in the Town’s Code of Ordinances, Design Guidelines for the Beaufort Historic District & Landmarks, Town of Beaufort Core Land Use Plan, Land Development Ordinance (updated 5.14.18) and the N.C. State Building Codes.  There are fees for some of the Planning & Inspections services.

The Customer Web Portal provides a one stop location for contractors, homeowners and applicants to:

  • Graphical user interface, website

  • Monitor their application status,
  • Schedule/cancel inspections,
  • View inspection status and history,
  • Pay fees due,
  • View/print documents/stamped plans, and
  • Upload documents to existing applications

    Citizens can search for building permits and view permit information without logging in.
