The governing body consists of a mayor and five commissioners, all elected at-large. The mayor, who serves a four-year term and votes only in the event of a tie, is the presiding officer at meetings of the Town Board. The commissioners serve 4-year staggered terms.
The Town operates under the council-manager form of government, where the Town Board serves as the legislative body and the Town Manager serves as the chief executive officer, responsible for administering the Town government.
The Town Board of Commissioners is responsible for deciding which services the Town provides and at what level, adopting a budget, setting the property tax rate, establishing fees, entering into contracts, awarding bids for construction or purchases, and buying and selling property.

The Board of Commissioners' Regular monthly meetings are at 6 p.m. on the 2nd Monday of each month. Monthly Work Sessions are at 4 p.m. on the 4th Monday of each month. All regularly scheduled meetings of the Board of Commissioners are conducted at the Beaufort Train Depot, 614 Broad Street, unless otherwise posted.
