Live Oak Street / NC 101 Roundabout Project Update
Updated: May 19, 2026
The N.C. Department of Transportation (NCDOT), in coordination with the Town of Beaufort, is continuing construction activities related to the new roundabout at the intersection of Live Oak Street (US 70) and NC 101. The project area extends along Live Oak Street from Fairview Drive to Crescent Drive and along NC 101 from Live Oak Street to W. Beaufort Road.
The project is intended to improve traffic flow, reduce delays, and increase safety for motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists. The roundabout will also serve as a gateway feature into the Town of Beaufort.
Project Schedule
Construction on NCDOT Project U-6058 began in October 2025 and is expected to continue through Fall 2027.
Current and upcoming work includes:
- Utility upgrades and replacements
- Stormwater drainage improvements
- Installation of a new culvert on NC 101
- Roadway reconstruction and paving
- Sidewalk construction
- Traffic pattern shifts and phased roadway closures
As construction progresses toward the intersection, motorists should expect periodic lane shifts, temporary closures, and changing traffic patterns.
Traffic & Access Information
During construction:
- Access to homes and businesses will remain open
- Temporary closures will occur on portions of Live Oak Street and NC 101
- Signed detours will direct through traffic around work zones
- Pedestrian access will be maintained where feasible using safety barriers
- Through traffic will be discouraged on Town streets such as Campen Road and Carraway Drive
Drivers are encouraged to use caution, follow posted detours, and allow additional travel time in the area.
About the Project
The project was developed in response to changing traffic patterns associated with the Gallants Channel Bridge replacement and the US 70 Bypass improvements.
The new multi-lane roundabout is designed to:
- Improve traffic flow and reduce congestion
- Reduce vehicle speeds and conflict points
- Improve overall roadway safety
- Better accommodate future traffic volumes
- Improve pedestrian connectivity and crossings
- Enhance the corridor through future landscaping and streetscape features
NCDOT conducted public input sessions during the planning process in Fall 2017.
