Fire Chief Tony Ray Announces His Retirement from the Beaufort Fire Department

BEAUFORT, N.C. — After years of dedicated public service, Beaufort Fire Chief Tony Ray has announced his retirement from the Beaufort Fire Department.

Chief Ray began his service with the Town of Beaufort in 2019, bringing with him a distinguished career in the fire service, including prior service as a Battalion Chief with the Charlotte Fire Department and Fire Chief for the Blue Ridge Fire Department.  Since joining Beaufort, Chief Ray has provided steady leadership, a strong commitment to public safety, and a deep dedication to the firefighters and residents he serves.

During his tenure, Chief Ray oversaw departmental operations, training, emergency response, and long-term planning, while fostering a culture of professionalism, teamwork, and community engagement within the Beaufort Fire Department. His leadership helped strengthen emergency preparedness and ensured the department remained ready to respond to the needs of a growing and dynamic coastal community.

“Chief Tony Ray's leadership has had a profound impact on our community,” said Mayor Sharon Harker. “Under his guidance, our Fire Department has developed into a strong, professional, and trusted service. This growth is a direct reflection of his dedication and passion for our town. He will be greatly missed, and we are extremely grateful for his years of service and the legacy he leaves behind.

Chief Ray expressed appreciation for the opportunity to serve Beaufort and work alongside dedicated firefighters and Town staff. “It has been an honor to serve the residents of Beaufort and to lead such a committed group of professionals,” Ray said. “I am proud of what we accomplished together and confident the department will continue to thrive.”

The Town of Beaufort will announce plans for leadership transition and next steps for the Fire Department in the coming weeks.

On behalf of the Town and community leaders, staff, and residents, Beaufort extends its sincere thanks to Chief Tony Ray for his years of service and dedication to protecting the community.

Ray’s last day with the Beaufort Fire Department is Jan. 31, 2026.
