Elizabeth Lewis joined the Town of Beaufort team in fall 2021 and currently serves as the Assistant Town Manager and Town Clerk. In this dual leadership role, her work touches nearly every aspect of Town government — supporting daily operations, coordinating across departments, and helping advance initiatives that serve residents, businesses, and visitors alike. The role requires responsiveness, analytical problem-solving, and sustained collaboration.
No two days look the same for Elizabeth. In her position, she balances operational oversight, administrative leadership, and strategic planning, all while staying responsive to the needs of the organization and community. While the work can be demanding, she finds it deeply rewarding — especially when projects move from concept to completion and result in meaningful improvements for Beaufort.
With 13 years of experience in local government, Elizabeth values the collaborative nature of municipal service. She enjoys working alongside dedicated colleagues to solve problems, anticipate future needs, and strengthen organizational effectiveness. Her approach reflects a commitment to continuous improvement and thoughtful public service.
A lifelong Carteret County resident with salt water in her veins, Elizabeth has always held Beaufort close to her heart. She views her role as both a professional responsibility and a personal commitment to the community she calls home. She takes pride in supporting efforts that keep Beaufort functional, accessible, and authentically Beaufort — from preserving its historic character to enhancing overall quality of life.
Among the projects she finds most meaningful is the Town’s waterfront initiative. As both a defining cultural asset and an economic driver, the waterfront plays a vital role in Beaufort’s identity. Elizabeth is proud of the progress made so far and believes the Town is well positioned for long-term success. Contributing to the protection and enhancement of this cherished community resource has been particularly fulfilling.
What Elizabeth loves most about Beaufort is its people. The engaged residents, longstanding small businesses, rich history, and waterfront heritage combine to make Beaufort a truly special place. She considers it a privilege to serve a community so deeply invested in its future. In addition to her professional responsibilities, Elizabeth is currently pursuing her Master of Public Administration at UNC Wilmington and expects to graduate later this year — a reflection of her commitment to professional growth and public service.
Outside of work and school, you’ll likely find Elizabeth on the water aboard her 20-foot skiff built by her dad, fishing, relaxing at the beach, or spending time with family and friends. She also enjoys attending concerts, playing softball, and cheering on her favorite sports teams. At home, her 13-year-old chocolate lab keeps her busy and receives plenty of attention.
