A typical day for Jim Provencher as the Laboratory Technician at the wastewater treatment plant involves collecting water samples, performing biological and chemical analysis, and helping ensure the Town remains compliant with North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NC DEQ) regulations. His work plays a vital role in protecting both public health and the environment by ensuring treated effluent discharged from the plant does not negatively impact the surrounding waterways.
Jim has always been environmentally minded and has a deep appreciation for the ocean and nature, making this career a perfect fit for his interests and passions. He takes great pride in knowing that his work helps preserve the natural beauty of Taylor’s Creek and ensures future generations can continue to enjoy the area’s unique coastal environment.
One of Jim’s proudest accomplishments was taking a giant leap of faith with his wife and daughters and relocating from New Hampshire to North Carolina in 2022. Since making Beaufort home, he has embraced the coastal lifestyle and enjoys the area’s rich pirate history, taking the boat out to the islands, searching for sand dollars, and watching the beautiful wild horses along the coast.
Outside of work, Jim also enjoys practicing calligraphy, a skill he learned from his father and continues to appreciate from time to time. His dedication to environmental stewardship, family, and community make him an important part of the Town’s wastewater treatment team.
