Own it? Respect it? Secure it?

The Beaufort Police Department is proud to announce it has joined Project ChildSafe as a distribution partner to promote responsible gun ownership, safe handling and secure storage. Project ChildSafe is a program of the National Shooting Sports Foundation to promote firearms safety and education. They are committed to promoting genuine firearms safety through the distribution of safety education messages and free firearm safety kits to communities across the U.S.

Project ChildSafe increases access to safe storage devices by distributing free firearm safety kits to residents that include a cable-style gun lock. Offering gun locks at no cost to gun owners lowers the barrier to safe storage, which is especially important for lower income families.

"The Beaufort Police Department received cable style gun locks from Project Child Safe, to distribute in our community," said Captain Joel Marino.

Free cable style gun locks are available to Beaufort residents at the Beaufort Police Department, 215 Pollock Street, Beaufort, NC between the hours of 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday. Simply drop by the front lobby and ask for a gun lock.

"This free gun lock program will encourage our citizens to keep their guns safe and out of the hands of children," Marino said.

The Beaufort Police Department received an initial 100 gun locks to distribute in 2022.
