Shelter Information

The Town of Beaufort does not operate emergency shelters. All shelters are opened and run by Carteret County Emergency Services.

Carteret County has several buildings designated as potential shelters during disasters. Decisions about which to open and when are made and publicized, along with other emergency information when a disaster threatens. When a hurricane is approaching, they may open multiple shelters equipped with generators that have capacity for pets and medical monitoring. If shelters are opened and a resident needs transportation or assistance, call (252) 222-5841; 911 if it's an emergency.

Please note there are times when a hurricane is approaching and the option to open a shelter is unavailable due to the strength of the approaching storm. In this scenario, shelter locations will be established further inland.

Evacuation and shelter updates will be posted in the News section of the Town's website, as well as to the emergency alert section on the top of the website pages, and social media. TV and radio stations will also update information. Carteret County Emergency Services maintains the Code Red Emergency System and utilizes social media to release information to the public. You can sign up for Code Red notifications on their website (link is above.)

Tips for Using Shelters

  • If at all possible make arrangements to stay with a friend or relative outside of the evacuation area.
  • Do not attempt to seek refuge in a shelter unless notified by authorities that it has been opened.
  • Listen to advice on evacuation and leave promptly when advised to do so.
  • Recognize that a public shelter's primary function is to provide a roof over your head. Food and blankets may not always be available.
  • Not all shelters are equipped or staffed for pet sheltering.  - Please be aware of requirements for pets. pre-registration form is downloadable below.
  • Weapons and alcoholic beverages are not allowed in a shelter.
  • Wherever you go, take provisions with you. Try to help others in a shelter any way you can.
  • Shelters will be established only as an emergency and temporary means of caring for people who cannot find refuge elsewhere

Shelter Supplies

The below information is taken directly from the Careteret County Emergency Services web page at http://www.carteretcountync.gov/138/Emergency-Services

Carteret County operates the shelters as a short term location for residents to go to escape the effects of a hurricane. The shelters are not intended to be used for the long term housing of persons and have not been stocked to provide this type of sheltering. Long term shelters, that provide cots and food, for persons displaced from their homes will be established after a storm has passed. Therefore, persons evacuating to one of the pre-hurricane shelters should bring the following supplies with them:

Baby supplies
Bedding (cot, lounge chair, blankets, and pillows)
Beverages (non-alcoholic)
Changes of clothing
Cooler with ice
Entertainment items (board games, deck of cards, and reading materials)
Evacuees should bring adequate supplies to last two to four days.
Food (non-cooking, non-refrigerated, and 2 day supply)
Medications

Medically Fragile Registration

Carteret County Department of Emergency Services officials may order or recommend an evacuation of specific areas of the county for reasons that include: natural disasters such as a hurricane, fire, or flood; man-made incidents, rail, or highway accidents; or technological disasters such as a hazardous material release.

Medically fragile registration is a voluntary program that provides evacuation assistance and sheltering to residents during such times. Transportation assistance can be provided for individuals in an ordered evacuation area who may not have a means of transport to a shelter, and for those requiring health or medical considerations to the Medically Fragile Shelter.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE? CARTERET COUNTY RESIDENTS:
• Requiring transportation to and from a designated emergency shelter;
• Requiring, within the limits of services provided, assistance with mobility, oxygen, routine medication administration, routine health monitoring, etc.

Proper registration requires that registration forms be filled out completely. Forms that are not filled out completely will be returned. Older versions of this form and forms from other programs do not contain the required registration data and will not be accepted.

Residents requiring greater levels of assistance than can be provided by this service such as a hospital bed, hemodialysis, life support equipment, IV chemotherapy, full ventilator, etc. are advised to make alternative plans with the assistance of a physician or health care professional.
