Turner Street Pedestrian & Streetscape Improvement Project

TURNER STREET IMPROVEMENT PROJECT NOTICE

BEAUFORT- The Town of Beaufort is in the process of pedestrian and streetscape improvements to the 100 block of Turner Street which will provide lasting benefits to the Town, its citizens, business owners and visitors and provide an appealing entryway into downtown Beaufort.

Work is scheduled to begin on Monday, Jan. 11, 2021 along the west side of Turner Street. The initial work will involve saw cutting and removal of the concrete sidewalk from the Turner and Front Street intersection to just north of Fishtowne Brew House. This work will be approximately 4-5 feet from the front of the businesses along this corridor. The remaining sidewalk will serve as the passageway for pedestrians desiring to access the businesses adjacent to the work.

Parking spaces on the west side of Turner Street will be closed for the duration of the project. Temporary “crossovers” will be placed between the sidewalk and the curb line at the street to provide points of access to the sidewalk from the street. They will be placed at several locations and will be subject to being moved as work progresses.

Demolition work is expected to span the length of the first week and will include the removal of trees, wooden timbers and other above-ground items.

During the second week beginning Jan. 19, Duke Energy is scheduled to bury new conduit and install related appurtenances within the limits the exposed area. This new infrastructure will replace the old buried wiring that currently serves the street lights. This work is expected to span all of the second week.

Upon completion of the work by Duke Energy, the Town’s contractor is expected to return to the site during the third week to continue their work. This work will largely involve the construction of a retaining wall just behind the street curb.

The overall project will take several months.
