EFFECTIVE DATE OF NEW COUNTY FLOOD MAPS
The North Carolina Flood Mapping Program (NCFMP), in coordination with the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), have completed updating the Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) in Carteret County. You may be more familiar with these maps being referred to as flood maps, flood inundation maps or floodplain maps.
New to our area will be the Coastal A Zone. It is defined as an area within a special flood hazard area, landward of a V zone or landward of an open coast without mapped coastal high-hazard areas. In a coastal A zone, the principal source of flooding must be astronomical tides, storm surges, seiches or tsunamis, not riverine flooding. During the base flood conditions, the potential for breaking wave height shall be greater than or equal to 11/2 feet. The inland limit of the coastal A zone is the Limit of Moderate Wave Action LiMWA) if delineated on a FIRM.
Please visit Carteret County's GIS website or the North Carolina Flood Risk Information System (NCFRIS website) to determine if your property will be mapped into the new Coastal A flood zone.
These map updates are effective starting January 17, 2025.
Please contact the Town’s Floodplain Administrator, Jeremy Ganey, at (252) 528-8772 to determine whether or not your property is located within the SFHA and to receive technical advice on how to protect your buildings from flooding.
