NCDOT to Begin Work on Cedar Street

BEAUFORT, NC - The Town of Beaufort has been notified that the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) will commence work on Cedar Street on Monday, Jan. 9, 2023. Crews will be working to remove existing curb, asphalt and sidewalk at several intersections along Cedar Street starting at the Cedar Street and Orange Street intersection and working towards the Cedar Street and Marsh Street intersection.
NCDOT anticipates being able to complete this work with the assistance of flagmen to help with traffic control during most of the work. However, Cedar Street will be closed periodically so that cross drainage lines can be placed across the street. Additionally, there will be times that lane closures span several days. The first one of these planned closures will be Tuesday, Jan. 17 at Craven and Cedar Streets. It will be closed for two weeks.  Future road closures are to be determined based on weather and availability of materials. This is the start of an ongoing project. The NCDOT project will create 14 bio-retention cells at the corners of four street intersections with the underdrains of these features connected to the recently replaced stormwater main along Cedar Street.
Additionally, the Town with grant funding from the North Caroling Division of Water Resources (DWR)    will construct 16,600 square feet of pervious pavement in the parking lanes of Cedar Street between Orange and Marsh Streets in the coming months. The pavement will capture approximately 6.4 acres of adjacent properties and streets stormwater runoff reducing the runoff reaching the impaired Town Creek watershed. The pervious pavement will be constructed along the parking lanes of the street between the bioswales.
“This positioning of the pavement should reduce the runoff directed to the bioswales, helping them to be more efficient at filtering pollutants particularly during smaller storm events,” said Town Engineer Greg Meshaw. “The two projects are viewed as a step towards the Town’s goal of watershed restoration.”
The Town urges drivers to use caution in the work areas and thanks everyone for their patience as these projects progress.
